The WIFI family
Are you WIFI? Well, not you
yourself, but your computers. WIFI is short for wireless
fidelity, and before long, it will be the number one new Internet
access system, far surpassing dialup and hardwire connections to
cable and DSL modems.
Why? Simply put, with WIFI, you can
put your
computer anywhere in the house, drag your laptop out to the kitchen
table, or out on the patio deck, and still access the
Internet. WIFI makes you mobile. Most laptops now come
with built in WIFI systems, ready for the next generation of access.
If that isn't enough, a little
known fact in the Internet world is that Google is widely speculated
to be interested or even planning to roll out nationwide WIFI access
so that wherever you are, you have instant access, even while riding
in your car.
WIFI is pretty inexpensive to
install too. As stated above, most laptops already come with
WIFI enabled, and adding a WIFI card to your current computer
shouldn't cost more than about $50. That merely leaves buying
a wireless router.
For most people, having a router is
a good idea anyway since it acts as a firewall to help protect
against intrusion on your system. With the antenna feature,
this firewall router now becomes a WIFI hub. You can connect
all of your hardline computers to it just like the old routers
because it has four ports in the back. But now you can also
add even more WIFI laptops. Even if each member of your family
has their own computer, a single $80 WIFI router can handle it all.
